The Sacred Importance of Akshay Vat: The Eternal Banyan Tree

Uncover the legendary significance of Akshay Vat, the immortal tree of Gaya, and why the final Pind Daan offering must be made here.

The Sacred Importance of Akshay Vat: The Eternal Banyan Tree

Overview

No ancestral ritual (Pind Daan) in the holy city of Gaya is considered complete without visiting Akshay Vat—the immortal Banyan tree. Located near the banks of the Falgu River, this ancient tree represents eternity, continuity, and divine presence. Devotees believe that offering the final Pind (rice ball) under the branches of Akshay Vat satisfies ancestors permanently, securing their final liberation (Moksha).

Importance

The word Akshay means imperishable or eternal, and Vat means Banyan tree.

According to legend, when Goddess Sita accompanied Lord Rama and Lakshmana to Gaya for the Pind Daan of King Dasharatha, Lord Rama went to collect puja materials. As the auspicious time (muhurta) was passing, the spirit of Dasharatha appeared and demanded the offering. Sita, under pressure, performed Pind Daan using Falgu sand (Pindas), witnessed by the Falgu River, a cow, a tulsi plant, a Brahmana, and the Akshay Vat tree.

When Lord Rama returned and questioned her, the first four witnesses lied out of greed, denying the ritual. Only the Akshay Vat tree spoke the truth, testifying that Sita had indeed performed the rites. Sita cursed the first four witnesses (which is why the Falgu River runs dry and Brahmanas in Gaya are never fully satisfied), but she blessed the Akshay Vat tree with immortality, declaring it would never lose its leaves or die, and that all Gaya Shraddha rites must culminate under its canopy.

Benefits

Lineage Blessings: Performs the final sealing of ancestral debt, ensuring that the blessings of the Pitrus flow uninterrupted to the performer's family.
