Akshay Vat
The immortal Banyan tree blessed by Goddess Sita. Offering the final pind here is believed to grant eternal liberation.
# Akshay Vat
About the Tree
Akshay Vat is an ancient, sprawling Banyan tree located about 1.5 kilometers from the Vishnupad Temple. The name "Akshay" translates to "indestructible" or "immortal," reflecting the belief that this tree survives cosmic destruction (Pralaya). It is the final destination for pilgrims completing the traditional multi-site Pind Daan pilgrimage.
Performing rites here marks the formal conclusion of the ancestral journey, symbolizing the transition of the ancestors' souls into eternal peace.
Spiritual Significance
During Goddess Sita's witness test, the Falgu River, cow, and Brahmana lied to Lord Rama, but the Banyan tree (Vat Vriksha) spoke the truth, confirming that Sita had indeed offered the pind. Pleased by its truthfulness, Goddess Sita blessed the tree with immortality and declared that anyone performing ancestral rites under its shade would secure eternal salvation (Akshay Moksha) for their lineage.
* Closing of Lineage Debts: Offering the final pind here signifies the successful discharge of the performer's filial duties towards their ancestors.
* Blessing of Continuity: After feeding the ancestors under the immortal tree, the performer receives the blessings of family longevity, health, and lineage continuity.
Rites and Rituals
Antim Pind Daan: Offering the final food balls of the pilgrimage cycle under the branches of the tree.
Sita-Rama Puja: Prayers dedicated to Goddess Sita and Lord Rama, expressing gratitude for their divine examples of devotion.
Thread Tying Ceremony: Devotees tie sacred threads around the tree's massive trunk, making vows for family protection and welfare.
Acharya Dakshina: Honoring the primary priests who guided the pilgrimage with final offerings of clothes, food, and dakshina.

"Tying the sacred thread around the massive trunk of the Akshay Vat after completing our Pind Daan was a moment of absolute closure. We felt as though a heavy spiritual weight had been lifted, replaced by peace."
